The K-Night Owls Featuring Taryn Newborne
ABOUT THE K-NIGHT OWLS: The K-Night Owls are a Blues formation that draw inspiration from a variety of blues styles and artists. They delve into the classic blues of Bessie Smith, Trixie Smith, and Ma Rainey, the New Orleans style of Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong, as well as the more swinging blues of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald. Beyond all of that they also enjoy sprinkling in a mix of R&B and guitar blues. They love being able to work all of these different styles of blues into their sets to provide a truly dynamic experience for dancers.
ABOUT TARYN: Born in Memphis, ("Home of the Blues" and "Birthplace of Stax Records") and raised in Atlanta, vocalist Taryn Newborne is rooted deeply in the soil of a rich musical heritage. She has often said that she loves music so much, it hurts her feelings. Growing up on a steady diet of the blues, soul and R&B of her parents generation, she's no stranger to what keeps the bodies on the dance floor. After years of dancing in her local scene, one of the major organizers suggested that Taryn put her own band together to perform at dances. Taryn Newborne and The Real Deal was born! She'd finally found her home, situated between her love of singing and dancing. Since becoming a regular in her home scene, Taryn has had the opportunity to make guest appearances with Funky Knuckles, Falty and the Defects, Ben Polcer, Jonathan Stout and Gordon Webster. |

Head DJ- Ross BlytheRoss Blythe (Chicago) thinks music is great, and that you should dance to it. Often, he’ll be dancing in his seat while selecting the next song. Slide some bourbon over and chat with him about what’s playing! Sure to bring the party, Ross has DJ’ed for Sweet Molasses Blues, Steel City Blues, Toronto Blues Battle, Southbound Blues Exchange, and other regional and national events. He’s a staple at Chicago’s monthly event Bluetopia, as well as weekly and monthly swing and balboa dances in the city
Andi HansenAndi lives and dances in Grand Rapids, DJing there and wherever else she can get her hands on an aux cord. Her musical comfort foods are delta and Chicago blues, and she loves sharing those and other styles with the dance floor. Whether she's starting the party or playing some nice chill music, her mission is to help you enjoy yourself, and maybe even find some new favorite songs.
Kadie PangburnKadie fell in love with jazz, blues and the world of vintage partner dancing through her childhood obsession with old black and white movies. For her, music, especially blues, is all about emotion and story telling and dancing is about getting the chance to express those emotions and stories through our bodies and experience them with another human being. Her music is filled with moody minor keys, passionate solos, energetic rhythms, mystery and most importantly, drama. Specializing in jazz blues, some of her favorite musicians include Count Basie, Illinois Jacquet, Billie Holiday & Woody Herman.
Marjorie BartellMarjorie Bartell comes from Philadelphia and is excited to bring her love of ballroomin’ to Backwater Blues because it bridges the gap between lindy hop and blues. She was first introduced to the dance world through lindy hop, but blues quickly stole her heart. Marjorie teaches, dances, and djs Blues and Lindy Hop in her home scene so be sure to ask her to dance! Other than dancing and teaching; she’s a cat mom, retired esports professional, and a current software developer.
